Competitions

Competitions are an important part of your law degree. Not only do they help you develop the skills you will need for future career opportunities, they also get you involved with other law students and personalities from the legal community. They are a great way to gain knowledge of the practical skills that are a part of practicing law.

Each tests different skills and abilities to help build your experience for moving into the legal industry. But you don't need to choose just one - register to compete in any you find interesting.

Internal Competitions

External Competitions

Each semester, the CLSS runs a variety of competitions for students, as well as workshops that help develop the necessary skills to compete.

Mooting: Mooting competitions provide students the opportunity to test their legal skills by stimulating a real-life hearing. Competitors are given a problem question, usually an appeal against a previous decsion, and are required to present a written and oral argument.

Negotiations: Negotiating is a way to resolve conflict without having to go to court, and is something many law gradutes will do in their legal careers post-university. This competition consists of two teams, who will stimulate a round table negotation based on general and confidential information given to each team before the competition.

Witness Examination: For aspiring counsel, this is the competition for you. The witness examination competition is an individual comp that requires competitors to firstly prepare their witness, and stimulate a witness examination from opening statements, examination-in-chief, cross-examination, and closing statements.

Students that compete in the internal competitions can also have the oppotunity to represent the University of Canberra and compete in intervasity competitions. In past years, the CLSS has supported students to compete in the following external competitions:

  • Australian Law Student Assosiation International Humanitrian Moot

  • Australian Law Student Assosiation Negotations Competition

  • Macquarie University Enviomental Law Moot
